Lymphedema is a chronic, lifelong condition that unfortunately cannot be cured but can be managed with compression therapy. Lymphedema is caused by a buildup of lymphatic fluid that leads to tissue swelling in the face, neck, hands, arms, feet, legs, and/or the trunk of the body. Certified lymphedema therapists (CLT) can help manage a patient’s condition with many techniques and products that apply the right amount pressure to the affected area with layered bandaging or garments to keep fluid moving into the bloodstream while stopping it from collecting in the affected area. To become a certified lymphedema therapist (CLT), one must complete a training program in Complete Decongestive Therapy, live lecture and hands-on instruction, and must pass the LANA national certification examination.
